Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia

Malignant proliferation of white blood cell precursors; see leukemia. APL is due to the abnormal transcription of a fusion protein precipitated by a characteristic translocation of chromosomes 15 and 17 (t15;17) that causes a position effect when the gene for the retinoic acid receptor is located near an oncogene.
