In biochemistry, an alternative term for a nitrogenous nucleotide (joined with a backbone sugar and phosphate); the fundamental building blocks of both DNA (adenine {A}, cytosine {C}, guanine {G}, thymine {T}) and RNA (where uracil {U} is substituted for thymine). A and G are purines; C, T, and U are pyrimidines.
