Form of syphilis contracted without sexual contact, characterized by lesions of the skin, mucous membranes and bones; caused by a spirochete, Treponema pallidum endemicum. Infects mainly children; endemic in the arid countries of the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Mediterranean. Aka nonvenereal syphilis, endemic syphilis.
