Enlarged superior portion of the central nervous system located in the cranial cavity of the skull, which consists of a convoluted mass of gray matter and white matter that serves to control and coordinate thought and movement. Its tripartite structure consists of the prosencephalon, mesencephalon, and rhombencephalon. Individual structures include the cerebrum, cerebellum, corpus callosum, hypophysis, vermis, spinal cord, medulla oblongata, and pons.
