Largest of the tarsal bones that forms the base of the heel; articulates superiorly with the talus and anteriorly with the other bones of the tarsus. Much of the weight of the body is transferred to this bone; it also serves as a site of attachment for the intrinsic muscles that move the foot. Alternate spelling: calcaneum.
