Cancellous Bone

Bone tissue that occupies the interior of flat bones and the epiphyses of long bones; characterized by a lattice framework of struts. The struts (trabeculae) of cancellous bone are integral in reducing bone weight; space between the trabeculae is filled with red marrow; the osteocytes are embedded in the trabeculae. Adjective: cancellated. Aka spongy bone.
