Protein hormone secreted by the blastocyst and placenta that affects sexual development while in utero as well as maintaining the activity of the corpus luteum during the first trimester of pregnancy; also thought to promote steroidogenesis in the fetoplacental unit and to stimulate fetal testicular secretion of testosterone. Aka human chorionic gonadotropin.
