A natural glucocorticoid that is metabolically convertable to cortisol. The human adrenal cortex secretes only minute amounts; most that is found in peripheral plasma is formed from cortisol by a reversible reaction. Cortisone functions to regulate carbohydrates during the conversion of fat, protein, and lactate into glucose, primarily in the liver (gluconeogenesis).
