Cyclic GMP

Cyclic guanosine monophosphate, a molecule that functions normally to open channels on the surfaces of photoreceptors in the dark, thus permitting sodium ions to enter the cells. When the rhodopsin in a cell begins to absorb light, the concentration of cGMP lowers, and the channels close.
