2. the inference of particulars from known or assumed generalizations, e.g. a syllogism, such as: all X are members of Z, Y is a specific instance of X, therefore Y is also a member of Z. Deduction is the form of logic used in the Popperian hypothetico-deductive approach to hypothesis falsification.
