Local population of very similar organisms that interbreed in nature and usually occupy a circumscribed area; hence the largest population unit that can be analyzed by simpler models of population genetics; a panmictic unit. Often used with a prefix, such as clinodeme, to specify the type of population under consideration. Aka breeding population, local population, Mendelian population.
