Dental Caries

Common childhood condition in AMHs, the result of metabolic activity of Streptococcus mutans within dental plaque; untreated lesions in enamel and dentine can cause severe toothache, and lead to los of the tooth. In fossil populations, such infections often became systemic, presumably contributing to the eventual death of an affected individual.
