1. theory that certain outcomes are strictly predetermined by definable causes and natural laws, and are therefore entirely predictable.

2. in biology, any form of constraint on the development of an organ, process or behavior; if the constraint is genetic, then some degree of the effect is due to the possession of a particular genotype.
