Diabetes Mellitus, Type I

Juvenile onset, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is an inherited autoimmune condition characterized by abnormal sugar metabolism. The IDDM1 gene is an autosomal recessive. In IDDM, the immune system attacks and kills the pancreatic beta cells that produce insulin; this results in chronic hyperglycemia, metabolic anomalies, and susceptibility to infections; often leads to a coma. It is treatable by substitution of functional insulin through recurrent injection (substitutional gene therapy). IDDM accounts for 10-15% of all cases of diabetes. Aka type I insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, insulin-dependent diabetes, childhood onset diabetes, juvenile onset diabetes (JOD), ketosis prone diabetes, brittle diabetes.
