Division Of Labor

Partitioning of work to subsets within a group of organisms. This may take the specific form of (a) a reproductive division of labor, in which heterokaryotypes assume specific roles according to sex (or ploidy); or (b) a more general form in which individuals form more or less amorphous behavioral units, ranks, castes, guilds, or vocations, and in which case the criteria for membership may be variable, as in humans.
