Dosage Compensation

Mechanism that regulates the expression of sex-linked gene products. In primates, all but one X chromosome is normally inactivated, leaving the genes on only one X chromosome actively expressed in both female (XX) and male (XY) mammals. When stained, the inactive X chromosome appears as a Barr body.
