Earlier Archaic Group

Forms of Homo sapiens ssp. that postdate Homo erectus but antedate AMHs; dates for archaics range from about 400 kya to 32 kya. Archaics possessed a nearly human-sized brain but retained certain primitive features of the skull such as a lower cranial height and a mosaic of other primitive and derived features. Candidates for the earlier archaic group include Arago, Bilzingsleben, Mauer, Petralona and Vértesszöllös; and possibly Kabwe.

Cf. later archaic group and anteneandertal.
