Ecological Community

Term that has several levels of meaning in ecology:

1. groups of populations that occur together within a particular geographical location.

2. association of organisms within a particular locality in which one or more species have characteristics that are conspicuous and are said to dominate that area; e.g. a savanna community, tropical rain forest community, etc.; this is also referred to as a biotope.

3. in reference only to those populations that interact within a particular area rather than simply those populations occurring together (the later condition is called an association by some ecologists).
