1. scientific study of the relationship between an organism and all aspects of its environment, including both physical factors and other organisms

2. all aspects of the environment of an organism which affect its way of life. When coined by Haeckel in 1869, the term had a more restricted meaning and was used in the sense that an individual organism is the product of heredity plus environment.
