Ectotympanic Bone

Bone that helps support the mammalian tympanic membrane of the ear; in primates a ringlike ectotympanic is found among some lemurs, while a tubular ectotympanic is present among the anthropoids and some prosimians. Because a tubular ectotympanic is present among some of the basal primates, it is uncertain which trait is primitive.

See tympanic region of the temporal bone.
