Effective Population Number

1. population size assumed in theoretical population genetics for small populations; a number usually smaller than observed population sizes such as might be measured by an ecologist in nature.

Cf. effective breeding population.

2. number of individuals in an ideal population that would have the same rate of increase in homozygosity as the empirical population under consideration.
