Colloquial term for (usually) a female gamete, an ovum, specialized for the storage of both genetic material and nutrients. Eggs have dissimilar forms in nonmammalian species. Although the central component of the mammalian egg is the central haploid reproductive cell, the ovum is actually a complex multicellular structure.
