Enzyme

Protein produced by living cells that speeds up (or catalyzes) a specific chemical reaction; enzymes bind to their substrates but are not used up in the reaction. Enzymes are generally given the suffix -ase (e.g. phosphatase, dismutase, etc.) and are one of the products of protein synthesis.
