Erectines

Vernacular for that group of extinct fossil hominids that were bipedal, encephalized, and who left cultural traces called the Acheulean tool tradition. Erectines first appear in the fossil record almost 2 mya, and apparently survived in certain geographic pockets until fairly recently; their formal binomial designation is Homo erectus.
