Ficon Hand-ax

Later variety of tool found in Europe, made from selected materials and worked into shapes that have been interpreted as esthetically pleasing and therefore nonfunctional. These handaxes may have been ornamental and/or symbolic. Some researchers attribute their manufacture to Homo heidelbergensis rather than to H. erectus.
