Fission-fusion Society (or Group)

Type of social organization in which individuals regularly form small subgroups (fission) for foraging but from time to time also join together in larger groups (fusion); the variation in grouping usually depends upon the type of food (e.g. the relative scarcity or abundance of a limiting resource).
