Folate

Member of the vitamin B complex; required for normal neural tube development, cell growth, and reproduction. It has been suggested that the maintenance of dark skin color (melanism) in equatorial latitudes is due, in part, to the maintenance of normal folate levels, which become depleted upon direct exposure to sunlight. Aka folic acid, folacin, PGA, vitamin Bc, vitamin M.
