Genetic Polymorphism

Occurrence of two or more alleles at a single locus in a population, with the frequency of the second most common allele being greater than 1%. The threshold of 1% is not arbitrary and suggests that a mechanism or pressure other than mutation alone is operating to maintain the elevated allele frequencies.
