One of the suprahyoid group of muscles. The geniohyoid originates from the inner surface of the mandibular symphysis and inserts into the body of the hyoid bone. Its action is to elevate and protract the hyoid, resulting in a dilation of the pharynx in preparation for receiving food; it also depresses the mandible when the hyoid is fixed.
