Germ Layer Theory

Proposal that a differentiating embryo has distinct structural layers. Proposed by Christian Pander (1794-1865) and Karl Ernst von Baer. In its original form there were many more proposed layers than the three primary germ layers still recognized by modern biologists (the endoderm, mesoderm, and ectoderm).

See recapitulation theory.
