Gluteus Medius

Muscle that moves the thigh. The gluteus medius originates from between the anterior and posterior gluteal lines of the ilium and inserts into the greater trochanter of the femur. Its action is to abduct and rotate the thigh medially; it also plays an important role, in concert with the gluteus minimus, in stabilizing the coxal joint during bipedal locomotion.
