Heme

Complex nonprotein, iron-containing pigment molecule found in animals; a porphyrin, heme is bound to each of the four polypeptide chains of hemoglobin and cytochrome, where it is the oxygen-binding element of these molecules. Aka ferroprotoporphyrin. Formerly called hematin.
