Hemoglobin

Protein molecule critical to metabolism, and the component in red blood cells (RBC) that binds reversibly and transports oxygen to tissues and carbon dioxide back to the lungs during respiration. Hb binds less reversibly to carbon monoxide (hence CO poisoning). Hb is found in the blood of most chordates and in the roots of some legumes.

See adult hemoglobin, carboxyhemoglobin, oxyhemoglobin, hemoglobin alleles, and coloration.
