Herbivory

1. dietary category applied to animals that consume plant matter; that is, primary consumers; see phytophagy.

2. more specific dietary category applied to animals (herbivores) that consume predominantly the nonreproductive parts of plants during the year or during a particular season. Adjective: herbivorous. Herbivory in this sense includes graminivory, folivory, and gummivory, but does not include frugivory or granivory.
