Heterogametic Sex

The sex that during meiosis gives rise to gametes that contain either a male (Y) or female (X) chromatid. The other sex, usually with homologous sex chromosomes, is the homogametic sex. In mammals and fruit flies, the male is heterogametic; in some birds, the female is the heterogametic sex.
