Process of evolving into one of the hominid lineages, as opposed to becoming an ape. When the case under consideration is modern humans, the process includes, as a minimum, changes in mode of locomotion to bipedality, thermoregulation, progenesis, and, for some lineages, encephalization. A consequence of encephalization is an increase in the capacity to carry culture.
