Hyena

General vernacular for a nocturnal terrestrial carnivore belonging to the family Hyaenidae and species of Proteles, Crocuta, or Hyaena; inhabits savannas and deserts of Africa and southwest Asia. Hyenas are both hunters and scavengers; they are often considered the agents responsible for some of the bone accumulations in paleontological sites.
