Bone inferior to the mandible which serves as an attachment for the muscles of the tongue; the hyoid is the only bone that does not articulate with any other bone. The hyoid of Neandertals is similar in size and shape to modern humans and some workers interpret this as evidence for sophisticated spoken language among Neandertals; others dispute this.
