Proposed explanation for certain observed facts. In science, a hypothesis must be testable, and possibly falsifiable (see falsification). Although many hypotheses can be, and routinely are, disproved, technically, a given hypothesis can never be proved with finality. However, some hypotheses have been so thoroughly tested that they have come to be accepted as fact; in other words, they are currently not capable of falsification.

Cf. theory.
