Index Fossil

Fossil specimen or species that is pre-sumed to have had an extensive geographic range (is highly vagile), and is found in several geographically distant regions. Index fossils are used to correlate the geological strata in which they are found, from site to site, even if discontinuous, a process known as biostratigraphy.
