Induction, Method Of

Mathematical technique for proving an ordered set of statements; the statements are numbered from the 1st (through kth) to the nth; if the first statement can be proven, then if the kth statement is also proven true, then the (k 1)th statement is also true. The technique is used in maximum parsimony problems and other complex genetic and taxonomic applications.
