1. first phase during mitosis, when the replication of chromatids takes place. In meiosis, two interphase stages occur, interphase I and interphase II.

2. that part of the eukaryotic cell cycle during which the chromatids are decompacted and enclosed in a nuclear envelope; many genes are transcriptionally active.
