Metallic micronutritional trace element and one of the essential nutrients of the human diet. Iron is found in hemoglobin, myoglobin, cytochrome, catalase, and peroxidase, and is involved predominately with respiration. It is stored in the liver and pancreas. Iron deficiency can result in anemia; the iron storage disorders include hemochromatosis.
