Two sets of bones that contain the teeth in mammals; evolutionarily they are derived from the second and third gill arches of ancestral fishes. The upper jaw is called the maxillary bone, the lower jaw, a single bone in anthropoids, is called the mandible. In other mammals the jaws are referred to as the dentary bones.
