Maternity Ascertainment

Method(s) of assessment that a given female is the mother of a certain offspring. Although a female always knows her offspring because she was present at birth, events such as adoption (in primates, as well as humans), hospital misidentification, and surrogate mothers have made maternity ascertainment as necessary as paternity ascertainment in some cases.
