Metacarpus

Five bones of the hand or fore paw between the carpus and phalanges. The metacarpals are numbered I-V, beginning with the thumb metacarpal. The lateral metacarpus I is the most movable and permits the thumb to oppose the other digits, a major anatomical adaptation of humans.
