Microcomplement Fixation

1. process of binding serological complement
(2) during an antigenantibody interaction.

2. measurement of the quantity of complement that participates in an individual antigen-antibody binding event. When immunological reactions between different taxa are measured, the amount of complement fixed (bound) during the reaction serves as an estimate of taxonomic distance, since complement fixation is proportional to genetic distance.

See immunological distance.
