Missing Link

Vernacular for any hypothetical intermediate form between two known species in the Great Chain of Being. Around 1900, for example, the fossil missing link between humans and apes was expected by Keith to have a large brain but ape-like teeth and locomotion, an expectation that was reversed by the actual australopithecine fossil evidence.
