Mitochondrial DNA

Circular DNA organized as a nucleoid, found in the mitochondrial organelle located in the extra-nuclear cytoplasm of eukaryotes, and transmitted by maternal inheritance. Researchers have found 199 mtDNA variants in African populations, 98 in European populations, and 73 in Asian populations, prompting some researchers to propose that the oldest variants are among the African populations.
