Molecular Sex Determination

1. estimation of biological sex by utilizing sex-specific molecular factors such as X chromosome genes or gene fragments. Molecular sex determination is useful in forensic applications, as well as for probing bone and fecal material obtained from archaeological sites, primate field sites, and for testing hypotheses of evolutionary interest.

2. specific sexing of skeletal material can be attempted by utilizing an assay for the amelogenin gene, aka the X/Y specific amelogenin test.
